Many use the coming of each new year as a time to re-examine their lives, their priorities and their goals for the future. 

Instead of New Year's Day, for me that day is each September 11. 

I was living and working in New York City on that tragic day 10 years ago when two planes crashed into the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon and one into a Pennsylvania field, killing 2,996. Exactly 28 days from now, my local recreation center will be home to quite a sight: the annual Relay for Life.

It was 12:42 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving. I was standing in a line about 20 shoppers deep at a Wal-Mart in Grand Island, Neb., with my dad.
